1. Find Me If You Can

35 years ago, the appearance of the European blind snake was recorded for the first time in Croatia. This was both the first and last time that this strictly protected species of snake (Typhlops vermicularis) was seen. The sighting occurred on Dugi otok in 1977, and the proof of it is held by the Vienna Natural History Museum (NMW 35897). What is curious is that the northernmost area where the European blind snake lives is located 360 km away from Dugi otok (Lake Skadar in Montenegro). As nobody has seen this species since, it is believed that Austrian researchers had mixed up the samples and made an error in their notes. However, according to some oral sources, this snake can still be found on Dugi otok. He who manages to find it wins a prize!

2. All the Secrets of the Underwater World of Dugi otok

Just like with any other Adriatic island, the underwater world around Dugi otok teems with underwater life. Exploring the depths of the sea has always posed a challenge to the abilities of mankind, while diving is a unique experience that takes us back to our very beginnings, to the days when we were still swimming in our mother’s amniotic fluid. When we’re underwater, sounds are different, deeper. The light that reaches us looks like stardust from a magic wand. We are weightless. Our movements are lighter, softer. Once our professional divers take you to the magnificent underwater world of one of the best diving destinations in the central Adriatic and show you the hidden treasures located around the islet of Mežanj or the underwater cave of Brbinjšćica, you will immediately get hooked on the exhilaration of being underwater. And you’re bound to return to again be at one with the sun, the underwater world and yourself.

3. Row into the Sunset

Dugi otok abounds with numerous bays that are ideal for kayaking - an increasingly popular way of spending your holidays or getting to know a new destination. The bays of Dugi otok and the area around the Veli Rat lighthouse definitely pose a challenge to all true kayakers! Telašćica Bay is one of the safest natural harbours on the Adriatic, and therefore one of the potentially most scenic kayaking destinations. The bay itself is protected from winds and waves and, since it is a part of Telašćica Nature Park, boat speed is also limited, which contributes to the safety of the entire area. The turquoise colour of the water, the view of the open sea, the sandy coast with pebbles that provide a good foot massage, the forest...considering all these perks and the breathtaking natural environment, kayaking truly represents the perfect way of exploring the bay in a unique way.

4. Say YES! to a wedding on Dugi otok!

Once you get into organizing a wedding, the most important thing is to choose a LOCATION. Dugi otok is a real romantic magnet due to its natural features and you will not go wrong if you decide to say a fateful YES on our island. Locations such as the Veli Rat lighthouse, Sakarun beach or the Telašćica cliffs are the ideal scenery for the most beautiful day of your life. We help organize weddings and wedding celebrations on our island and make a fully custom-made wedding, tailored to your wishes. It is possible to organize a civil or church wedding on the island. We have been at your service from the very beginning: communication with the Registry Office in Zadar or a priest on the island, coordination of all services in accordance with your wishes.

5. Traces of the Past

Mention Dugi otok, and most will first think of its countless natural beauties that are different with every new day – for the sun doesn’t always set at the same time, the clouds in the sky are never the same and the sea sparkles in thousands of hues. However, Dugi otok also offers richness of another sort – one that has remained unchanged for centuries, and which precisely with this continuity offers an experience that we citizens of the modern world find unique. Dugi otok has become a true archaeological treasure trove, as we can find a number of accessible localities dating between 10000 BC to the 19th century AD on the island. What is less known is that the bay of Telašćica is, according to a document from the 10th century, the first place where the practice of fishing has been recorded. Most of the archaeological localities are located within Telašćica Nature Park, but let’s not forget those that are located outside its boundaries. Explore the ˝permanent exhibits˝ offered by this region and let your experiences of the island help you dive into history.

6. The Healing Flavours and Fragrances of Dugi otok

Dugi otok (˝Long island”) is known far and wide for its pristine natural environment. This 50-kilometer-long island is home to an immensely diverse flora and many other natural beauties that are in full bloom in spring, when all of the nature reawakens and the island becomes a palette of intense and beautiful colors. All this is reason enough to visit the island outside high season. The diversity of the medicinal plants that abound on Dugi otok provides an excellent reason to go on a multi-day tour of the island and attracts an increasing number of visitors every year. The best way to come to know these plants is to go on an expert-guided tour of Telašćica Nature Park or the Significant Landscape of the north-western part of Dugi otok. Come and soak all the colors and smells of this region... come and experience Long Island!
